Lyric Analysis

Genre Research

What I Have Learnt:

I have learnt that our idea fits well with the rock genre of the music track we've chosen. I've also learnt that rock genre music videos vary dramatically and can be adapted to show what you personally want it to. The videos vary from dark dingy music videos that are slightly creepy, to band members in a plain warehouse messing around like we see in the Red Hot Chili Peppers song "Can't Stop". So the rock genre gives us a lot of freedom of what we can create and also gives us the chance to put in our personality into the music video, which makes it more personal to us.

Music Video Research - Task 3

Made with Padlet

What I Have Learnt:
I have learnt that the Foo Fighters are a very successful band that was set up by Dave Grohl who was previously the drummer in the very successful band Nirvana until Kurt Cobain passed away. Their record label who signs them is also extremely successful as they also sign lots of extremely talented artists. Overall i have learnt that the Foo Fighters is made up of 6 very talented men that produce amazing music and therefore have become very famous because of it.

Music Video Research - Task 2

I emailed one of the label companies that the Foo Fighters are signed by "RCA" and asked for the Foo Fighters permission to use their song "Breakout" in our music video.

What I Have Learnt:
I have learnt that asking permission to use an artists song for our work is important as you can get done for copyright. Also its polite to as thats there song that they've created and we want to use it.

Music Video Research - Task 1

The song we've chosen:

Breakout Lyrics

You make me dizzy running circles in my head
One of these days I'll chase you down

Well look who's going crazy now
We're face to face my friend
Better get out, better get out

You know you make me breakout
Make me breakout
I don't wanna look like that
I don't wanna look like that

You know you make me breakout
Make me breakout
I don't wanna look like that
I don't wanna look like that

You know you make me breakout

You can see this on my face
It's all for you
The more and more I take
I break right through

Therapy still scares me
Put me on my back again

I may be crazy, little frayed around the ends
One of these days I'll phase you out

Burning in the blast-off, burning in the blast-off
watching me crawl away
Try to get out, try to get out

You know you make me breakout
Make me breakout
I don't wanna look like that
I don't wanna look like that

You know you make me breakout
Make me breakout
I don't wanna look like that
I don't wanna look like that
I don't wanna look like that

Breakout!
Breakout!
Breakout!
Breakout!
Go, go, go!

You know you make me breakout
Make me breakout
I don't wanna look like that
I don't wanna look like that

You know you make me breakout
Make me breakout
I don't wanna look like that
I don't wanna look like that
I don't wanna look like that
I don't wanna look like that

You know you make me breakout
Make me breakout
Make me breakout

Yeah!

Thinking of a Concept

What I Have Learnt:
I have learnt that we have lots of little ideas for our music video that we could potentially do. We need to combine all these ideas or take all these ideas into account and come up with one really detailed simple but effective idea that's not over complicated and will look really effective and realistic on camera. By presenting our initial ideas to the class in the future if will help us fill in gaps that we didn't realise that things were missing from that and also help us develop our story line to make it more professional. By also talking to our class mates it allows us to ensure that its going to be able to hit a larger target audience so that we can adapt it so everyone likes it.

What I Have Learnt:
I have learnt that people don't tend to watch the music video unless they really like the song or are curious about what the music video could be, most people have an idea of what the music video would be by just listening to it and interpreting the song how they think. Also streaming/ downloading a music video now is extremely rare unless the person is a major fan and loves the video. However most people if they do download music tend to download the audio as its easier that the reason for music to listen to it, the music video is a bonus.

Task 4 - Analysis of Music Video Using Theory

What I Have Learnt:
I have learnt that certain things such as:
  • Clothing
  • Body Language
  • Sound - Diegetic/ Non- Diegetic
  • Props
  • Location
All help to portray that genre and they help to portray the image that the artist/ band want to, to the audience. Also I have learnt the deeper meaning of why things happen in a music video and how things are done to portray/ show a certain theory through their narrative - also helping the audience to understand their personality more and how they want the media to view them.

Task 3 - Representation of Genre

What I have learnt:

I have learnt that that genre cant be represented in many different ways, however most artists tend to present the genre they are performing  stereotypically. You can also see that the artist does influence the video slightly as they also portray their personality through their video e.g Britney Spears represents her pop genre but also shows that she likes to portray a seductive image across to the audience.
In my video I am going to represent the genre well but also try and portray some of my personality through the narrative side of the video.

Task 2 - Theories of Music Videos

What I have learnt:
I have learnt that music videos have more detailed meanings to them that just something to watch such as Beyonce's music videos are portraying independent women through the way that all the people in her music video are women and they're showing there independence. I feel like the artist can adapt their music video to portray them in a way that they want the audience to see them.

Task 1 - Media Language

Media Language by Zoë Boxall

What I have learnt:

I have learnt that the videos created that go with songs tell you a lot about the artist and how they perceive themselves or what they aspire to be and reflects the genre of music. For example, the videos of different genres tend to stick to their stereotypes, as we can see in my table above that rock music tends to stick to colours such as black and white and rap music tends to have girls dancing or standing in little clothing and money being chucked around. This shows me that when I create my video I need to represent my genre stereotypically and in my own way too.
